Gov’t rushes the P30k cash aid to OFWs’ children

With the opening of classes last Monday, October 5, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello announced that the government is rushing the release of the P30,000 cash assistance for the children of seabased workers and other overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) displaced by Covid-19.

In an interview in Gising Pilipinas over Teleradyo this morning, Secretary Bello said it would start as early as this coming October 15.

“Inaapura na namin (ang pagbibigay niyan) kasama namin si Secretary. Popoy de Vera ng CHED (Commission on Higher Education)..  Ibibigay iyan ng cash para sa kanilang pang tution at iba pang panganngailangan nila.”

He clarified that the P30,000 cash aid would be sourced from the P1 billion budget earlier allocated by President Duterte to CHED and not from the Department of Labor and Employment .

“That’s the P1 billion na ibinigay ni Presidente Duterte sa CHED para sa mga anak ng OFWs na na-displaced  ng Covid-19,” the secretary pointed out.

“We’re targeting about 30,000 na mga anak ng OFWs.  Bawat OFW (ay) entitled ng one college student (as beneficiary).

He said that it’s a one-time financial assistance, but did not explain how and where to avail of the cash aid.   “One time lang iyan, pero palagay ko pagdating next year baka magbigay na naman si Pangulong Duterte  basta para sa mg OFWs,” the Labor secretary commented.
